Moving into a new home can be chaotic, but it does not have to be! You will have things to remember, belongings to pack, and other tasks to complete. Having steps prepared in advance will help you have a smooth move! Here are some tips on moving out of the old and into the new!
Declutter. Donate or sell what you don’t need!
Before packing everything to move into your new house, you may want to consider downsizing. Over the years, you have probably accumulated objects that you no longer need. Unwanted furniture, clothing, or other miscellaneous items are all good to donate or sell. If you have not used an item in two or more years, or it no longer serves its purpose, get rid of it! You do not want your new home to be cluttered with unwanted items. Enter your new home with a fresh start!
Packing for the move.
At least two weeks before the big move, start packing. Packing may be one of the most dreaded parts of moving. However, it is an obvious task that must happen. To pack, you’ll need boxes (lots of them!), tape, markers, and bubble wrap/paper, for breakable items.
Tip: Ask a local grocery store if you can have some boxes! This will save you some money.
Don’t procrastinate packing. Procrastinating the packing process will only hurt you in the long run. Create stress-free packing by starting early instead of scrambling at the last minute.
Make. A. List.
Organization is key when moving to a new home. To avoid a headache, make a checklist of items and mark them off as they are packed away (you will be glad you did). Organize belongings by room, place them in the box, and label the box! For example, all of the kitchen items should stay in the boxes labeled “kitchen.” Unpacking and remembering you put everything in random boxes will only cause stress.
Move in day.
When unpacking, start with the essentials; the items you need to keep your home running (basic toiletries, paperwork, medications, chargers, food). Before unpacking the rest, bring the boxes to their designated room. Instead of piling boxes into a tower, bring them to the room that they will eventually be unpacked in. Before you know it, you will be relaxing in your new crib!
